I love the ocean, and I love old maps. Therefore, this animation was a really really fun project.

I was asked to come up with a new opening animation for a show which hilights precious gem jewelry from various parts of the world. In the show opening I needed to let the audience know which country was to be the topic for that show. The animation was made so that each time there was a new show I just needed to rerender a small portion of the whole animation (the part which hilights a certain country) to save time. What I did was just use a mask, of the certain country, and applied that to the transparency and incandescence of the map shader in Maya, then I just keyframed the values of those two fields from min to max to give the glowing country effect. In this way, the only thing I needed to make for the new animation was a single mask, and then just rerender from the spot when the glow comes in and blinks. I also had to adjust the ending camera zoom to hone in on the country in question.
